How Starting a Blog Made Me a Better Stay at Home Mom

I never thought I would be a stay at home mom. After getting an associates degree in graphic design I was really hoping to get into the workforce. Then one day I heard some advice from someone I love just how beneficial being a stay at home mom could be. That moment really changed my entire way of thinking about being a working mom. So much so that somehow, 6 years after having my first baby I decided to also be a homeschooling mom! What?!? A day has never passed that I haven’t wanted the best for my kids. Unfortunately, one thing I’ve let slip away was myself. I forgot that taking care of myself helps me be better at taking care of them. I needed something more than being a stay at home mom had to offer. So let’s talk about how starting a blog is actually the thing that made me a better mom.

Stay at home mom struggles

For a while I found myself without a job and then when I had part-time jobs I felt overwhelmed trying to juggle homeschooling, cooking, cleaning, and being a wife.

I felt unhappy and uncomfortable. Like I was missing something. Having always been a “creative type” I couldn’t help but think I needed to find a way to nurture that side of me.

Any stay at home mom knows that there are days that are harder than others but it started to feel like every day was a struggle.

I knew I needed to do something but I wasn’t sure what.

Contributing to income

On top of wanting something for myself, separate from motherhood, I also wanted to be able to financially contribute to our household.

We had really started getting intentional about paying off our debt and I wanted to do anything I could to help out.

I have always loved the reward of working for money and I know I thrived when I was running my own photography business. Setting my own schedule, being in charge of myself, and have creative work made me feel on top of the world.

If you have read our family’s downsizing story, then you might know that I gave up the photography business. Photography started to feel suffocating in so many ways that I slowly started giving it up more and more.

What could I do that still allowed me to be my own boss, set my own hours and be fully responsible for my own success? –That’s not asking much, right?

I wanted something that made money, allowed me to be my own boss, and set my own hours.

Homeschool mom

On top of all of this, homeschooling had to stay in the back of my mind. What job could I find (no matter how flexible) would allow me to continue to homeschool? My husbands hours had continuously changed which made it really tough tohold down a part time job.

So I needed a way to set my own hours, work from home and use my creative “juices.” That’s when I remembered my aunt had told me about blogging.

Years before when I was pregnant my aunt told me that I should start a blog because I could actually make money from it. I shrugged it off because it sounded like too much work. Now all of a sudden, it seemed like it was the job that was made for me.

Starting the blog

Before I started the blog, I knew I needed to take this venture seriously. While I had seen major success with my photography business, I never really gave it 100% of my effort. I really just wanted to make a little extra cash and it happened to take off.

With the blog, I wanted things to be different. I wanted to do everything right and I was determined to treat my blog like a business.

I started blogging in this order:

Blogging for business

I did not want to be the type of person who started a blog and casually wrote whenever I felt like it. That was the old me and I didn’t want to be her anymore.

Previously I had actually had a “blog” that I wrote in every few months for fun. Now I knew I needed this to be an income. I needed this to be a job for me at some point so I treated it like one from the start.

Creating my own course!

Now that I have been blogging for 2 years and a stay at home mom I have created a bigger income from it than I thought possible, I created a course of my own to help other aspiring bloggers learn what to do and how to be successful.

This year I made Stay at Home Blogger course to try to fill the gaps for other wannabe bloggers. Here are some of the things I answer in my course:

  • Exactly how to create affiliate links
  • How to make money blogging
  • Operate Pinterest for traffic
  • How to schedule Facebook posts
  • Organizing your schedule
  • Working with brands
  • Anything else I ever think of…

I will keep updating the course to try to always get the best info to other bloggers because it has been such a game-changer in my life.

The cost of a blog

While starting a blog doesn’t really cost that much. (You can get started for around $3 per month.) I am a big believer in starting out the right way.

The good news is, you can start a blog at a very low cost especially when compared to other new business start-ups. And you have the potential to make money passively for years!

Where I’m at today

I truly feel like I have found my calling. It seems like every single event in my life prepared me for this awesome job and life right now. This blog has helped me:

Seriously, this list could go on and on.

I write this all not for bragging rights, but because I believe there are others out there who need these same things that I needed.

Mamas who got good grades in art, writing, and english classes.

You are fully capable of having everything you want. In fact, there are bloggers who took this gig on the road. Truth is, I hope to one day too!

If you are a mom who finds yourself in a similar position, I highly recommend taking a deeper look at blogging.

In less than a year, I have not only doubled my part-time income, but I have gained so much freedom, confidence, and independence and I get to do it all on my own terms! Start a blog now!
