I am not happy with my life, my career choice, my spouse, myself... Here is why we get off track and how we can bounce back.

Spoiler Alert: You Must Enjoy the Process, to Enjoy the Outcome.

There are so many times in life where we chase goals. We have this vision of who we want to be and the life we want to have. That is beautiful. However, what tends to happen is that we chase a goal for the wrong reason. We never truly take a moment to get quiet with ourselves, tap into what our deepest desires are and therefore when we reach the goal or achieve the success it falls flat. These are stories we have heard time and time again from 6-figure Wall Street earners to people who bought their dream home only to sell it and downsize a year later. So, how do we avoid the fallout? What can we do to side-step the whole crash and burn? The hint is in enjoying the process itself.

Design your life after you’ve tapped in

The best way to ensure you are creating a successful life for yourself is to first get crystal clear about who you are and what you want. And here’s the kicker…if someone else could say the exact same thing…then that is not what you really want.

Things like:

  • I just want to be happy. (Yeah, we all do.)
  • I would love for my family to be financially secure. (Ok, yup, samesies…)
  • I want to work at a job I love and still be able to travel. (…I’ll just nod along…)

All of these fluff answers are great, but they aren’t going to actually help launch you in the direction you want to go until you learn to connect them to your soul goals.

This is the first phase we go through in the Rich Minimalist course. You need to understand on a deeper level what it is that sets you apart.

What holds most people back from everything in life is that they are too afraid to boldly claim the life they want for fear of being selfish or living too large. The second thing is that a lot of times we chase a goal solely based on a limiting belief we have about ourself.

In other words, we want the promotion because our parents were never really proud of us and deep down we hope we can win approval.

We marry the partner because they have a status that we have always felt would make us worthy of love.

Seriously, it sounds corny, but it’s so true.

You can’t align with someone else’s vision

More often than not a lot of us stray in life because we have allowed ourselves to follow someone else’s pre-laid path for what we should do and who we should be.

This could have been a well-meaning parents or societies standards for what is acceptable.

At the end of the day, many of us will diligently work down the path that wasn’t meant for us because we have been lead to believe it will bring us happiness and fulfillment.

Unfortunately, most people don’t realize they are working toward someone else’s vision until they have accomplished it and food that it doesn’t feel aligned with who they are.

Remember, it’s not too late, there are always actions you can take to change the course of your life (no matter what age or stage you find yourself in).

We only have now

One thing that is so crucial to remember is not to chase some far off distant goal in the future, but instead to allow yourself to be happy in the now.

When we spend our days working toward a future goal, we stop learning how to appreciate the present. If we stop appreciating the present, we won’t know how to be happy on the day our goals are actualized.

What often happens is we choose to either live in the past or run toward the future only we never are truly able to live in either of these time frames, therefore, we miss out on the life that is right in front of us now.

Whenever you go after a desire or start writing out manifestations for yourself, take the time to also question whether or not you will enjoy the process itself. Sure, I’m sure there will be bad days, we all have them, but are those bad days minuscule in comparison to the enjoyment you’ll get from it?

Mark Manson said it best when he said, “What’s your favorite flavor of shit sandwich.” In other words, life is going to be shitty in some form no matter what path you choose. Which one do you choose?

Once you know what path you will enjoy the process of, jump on with both feet! You only have the now so you sure as hell better enjoy right NOW as much as you possibly can.

A state of joy propels us forward

Have you ever noticed how when you get into a good groove, everything feels fun and easy? It feels like you could work forever and yet time flew by because you were totally lost in the process. That is where the sweet spot is.

You see, the more we embrace the process of growth, learning and working toward a goal, the easier it will be and the quicker it will take us where we want to go.

One thing to always remember (since we aren’t always living in a state of total ecstasy) is that if you are feeling anything but total despair, that’s a good sign. In 5 Minute Zen Practices we talk about the Emotional Guidance Scale created by Abraham Hicks and when you look at the scale, you’ll notice that emotions like mad or bored are actually a pretty good place to be.

Of course, you’ll notice that joy is at the top of the Emotional Guidance Scale because this is the place where we are most likely to be in a state of ease and flow.

The next time you aren’t exactly feeling like a ray of sunshine the best thing you can do is:

  1. Find total acceptance with where you are
  2. Allow yourself to naturally climb the Emotional Guidance Scale

And remember, don’t wait for some goal in the future to allow yourself to be happy. Practice happiness even before the goal is accomplished, otherwise you might forget how to just be happy!

Do one thing every day that shows you your outcome

We has humans love a visual aid, don’t we? If we are working toward something we really want, we can really lose steam when we don’t physically see any results.

This is why when we work to get into better physical shape doing things like before and after photos or taking measurements is more helpful than the scale. (Since you could be adding muscle and increasing that damn number.)

So what is something you can do to start showing yourself proof that the thing you are seeking is already here in the now with you?

Here are some ideas:

  • If you are writing a book, create a mock up of the cover, print it out and keep it on your desk.
  • Working toward a job? Get business cards made up with your new title on it.
  • Planning to marry the love of your life? Watch uplifting stories of true life romance.

Get creative with this and then get moving! Have fun, stay in alignment and if you need it, get guidance and encouragement to help propel yourself forward. Use code FUNSIZED to save 10% on Rich Minimalist.
